Quality competition versus price competition goods: An empirical classification

چکیده
Based on the recent trade models of the Heterogeneous Firms Trade (HFT) model and the Quality Heterogeneous Firms Trade (QHFT) model, we classify export goods (at the HS 6-digit level of disaggregation) by quality and price competition. We find a high proportions of quality-competition goods for the major EU countries and lower proportions for Canada, Australia and China. However, the overlap of these quality-competition goods is not large, which suggests that characteristics of export goods are substantially different across countries at the same HS 6-digit code. © The Authors. Price competition and reputation in markets for experience goods: An experimental study
Price Competition and Reputation in Markets for Experience Goods: An Experimental Study* We experimentally examine the effects of price competition in markets for experience goods where sellers can build up reputations for quality. We compare price competition to monopolistic markets and markets where prices are exogenously fixed (somewhere between the endogenous oligopoly and monopoly prices)....
متن کاملA Note on Price and Quantity Competition in Differentiated Oligopolies
In this note we show that the results developed in Singh and Vives (1984) are sensitive to the duopoly assumption (Rand Journal of Economics 15, 546-554). If there are more than two firms, prices may be higher under price competition than under quantity competition. This will be the case if quality differences are large and goods are complements. If goods are substitutes, high-quality firms may...
متن کاملReference-Dependent Utility, Product Variety and Price Competition
Reference-Dependent Utility, Product Variety and Price Competition Products such as iPhone, Coca-Cola and Tide serve as the standard against which consumers evaluate other members of the category. Empirical evidence suggests consumers care about not only the consumption utility derived from a product but also the gain-loss utility in comparison to the reference product of the category. This pap...
متن کاملA model of brand competition for durable goods supply chains in a dynamic framework
Game theory is an efficient tool to represent and conceptualize the problems concerning conflict and competition. In recent years and especially for durable products, competition between domestic and foreign brands for gaining market share has received a considerable attention. This paper study electronic commerce concepts by differential game theory and introduce a novel and comprehensive mode...
متن کاملPrice controls, non-price quality competition, and the nonexistence of competitive equilibrium
We investigate how price ceilings and floors affect outcomes in continuous time, double auction markets with discrete goods and multiple qualities. When price controls exist, the existence of competitive equilibria (the solution concept of classical market theory) is no longer guaranteed; hence, we investigate the nature of non-price competition and how markets might evolve in its presence. We ...
